The Glycerin Bottle

Did you ever wonder where the straps on the glove-box straps were used for?

Porsche provided a bottle of glycerin for the Porsche 912 (also for the Porsche 365 and the Porsche 911). It is not clear if this glycerin bottle was provided standard with the Porsche 912 when delivered, or only if it was a special order or that it was only provided when the Porsche 912 was delivered to a ‘’cold region’’.

It seems to be only for 3-straps modelyear ‘65 and ‘66 Porsche 912’s, although there is also a rumour that the bottles were provided until the beginning of 1970.

The glycerin was ment to be used to lubricate the door – and ignition key locks to prevent freezing of locks (in sub-zero weather conditions).

The glycerin was also used for lubrication of the rubber parts such as the door seals.

A small instruction booklet in English language was attached to the bottle. The image on the booklet has always been a 356, never a 911/912.

Nowadays an original 911 -/ 912 – glycerin bottle (they are not the same as the 356-bottle! 356’s had a black bakelite cap, the 911 / 912-bottles had a red plastic cap) is a very rare and extremely hard to find item !  Reproductions are available.

The text on the booklet:

“Dear Customer: Though your Porsche’s door lock resists the entry of water, the danger of condensation water is still imminent with sub-zero weather. Therefore, to prevent it from freezing fast, inject liguid of attached spray-bottle into key slot, operate both key and knob, and clean lock and vicinity thereafter.

Do not mix or confound with food! Not dangerous when got into touch with the skin, even if slight injuries occur!”
